Facebook Marketplace radius, explained
The radius decides how far Marketplace looks from your search location. Here’s how to make it work for you.
The settings
Marketplace offers these radius steps: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 250 and 500. The unit depends on where you are: miles in the United States, kilometres in Canada. In the address of a Marketplace search, the value appears as radius= followed by the number, read in your own unit. So radius=500 is 500 miles in the US but 500 km (about 310 miles) in Canada.
The planner detects your unit from your time zone. You can switch it under the search box, and the circles on the map are resized to match.
Which radius for what
| Radius | Good for |
|---|---|
| 1–10 mi | Free stuff, quick pickups, dense cities |
| 20–40 mi | Furniture and appliances you’ll collect |
| 60–100 mi | Cars, tools, a day trip for the right item |
| 250–500 mi | Rare items, collectibles, shipping-friendly goods |
Why bigger isn’t always better
A 500-mile circle covers a huge area, but you’re still running one search from one centre, and results tend to favour nearby listings. Covering the same area with several 60- to 100-mile searches centred on different cities shows each area’s own results.
Going beyond the maximum
The radius planner lets you set a reach of up to 1,500 miles. It picks Marketplace locations whose circles overlap to cover that reach, weighted by where people live, and tells you what percentage is covered.
